那么什么叫“责任感”呢？我们生活在一定的社会关系中，并在其中担当一定的角色，因而也必须承担一定的义务，责任感就是那种我们对自己的角色和所承担的义务的感知。通常所说的责任感一般是指“社会责任感”，这又可分为家庭责任感与集体责任感。
复旦大学教授张庆熊在谈到家庭责任感时曾引用这样一则报道。生病的母亲问她含辛茹苦养育了18年的女儿：“如果我这病一时半会儿好不了怎么办？”母亲原以为女儿会说句孝顺话的，谁知女孩却说，那就安乐死吧。
如此冷酷的口气，仿佛这生病的母亲同她毫不相干似的。然而，类似的例子在我们身边并不鲜见。比如有些子女一边用父母的钱摆阔气，一边却嫌父母寒伧丢了他们的脸。这些人哪知生活的不易和每个家庭的具体情况，似乎他们是这个家庭的局外人，因此只知索取，却不知理解，更谈不上回报。如此下去，轻则贻误自己，拖累家庭，重则祸害社会。究其因，就是缺乏家庭责任感。
爱因斯坦说过：“用专业知识教育人是不够的，通过专业教育，学生可以成为一种有用的机器，但是不能成为一个和谐发展的人。”很多著名大学的领导者也认为，现代大学应高度重视的第一件事是要首先解决高级专门人才的社会责任感这一极为严肃的问题。因此就学校而言，>素质教育的多维化要求学生不仅要在德智体美全面发展，而且在社交活动中，必须具有集体主义义务感、荣誉感。
