The world?s population continues to grow. There now are about 4 billion of us on earth. That could reach 6 billion by the end of the century and 11 billion in a further 75 years. Experts have long been concerned about such a growth. Where will we find the food, water, jobs, houses, school and health care for all these people?

A major new study shows that the situation may be changing.

A large and rapid drop in the world?s birth rate has taken place during the past 10 years. Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and industrial nations.

Researchers said they found a number of reasons for this. More men and women are waiting longer to get married and are using birth control devices and methods to prevent or delay pregnancy. More women are going to schoo(来自:WWw.SmhaiDa.com 海达范文网:let,me,grow)l or working at jobs away from home instead of having children. And more governments, especially in developing nations, now support family planning programs to reduce population grow.

China is one of the nations that have made great progress in reducing its population growth. China has already cut its rate of population growth by about half since 1970.

Each Chinese family is now urged to have no more than one child. And the hope is to reach a zero population growth with the total number of births equaling the total number of deaths by the year 2000.

Several nations in Europe already have fewer births than deaths. Experts said that these nations could face a serious shortage of workers in the future. And the persons who are working could face much higher taxes to help support the

growing number of retired people.

I arrived in the United States on February 6,1966, but I

remember my first day here very clearly. My friend was waiting for me when my plane landed at Kennedy Airport at three o?clock in the afternoon. The weather was very cold and it was snowing, but I was too excited to mind. From the airport, my friend and I took a taxi to my hotel. On the way, I saw the skyline of Manhattan for the first time and I stared in astonishment at the famous skyscrapers and their man-made beauty. My friend helped me unpack at the hotel and them left me because he had to go back to work. He promised to return the next day.

Shortly after my friend had left, I went to a restaurant near the hotel to get something to eat. Because I couldn?t speak a word of English, I couldn?t tell the waiter what I wanted. I was very upset and started to make some gestures, but the waiter didn?t understand me. Finally, I ordered the same thing the man at the next table was eating. After dinner, I started to walk along Broadway until I came to Times Square with its movie theatres, neon lights, and huge crowds of people. I did not feel tired, so I continued to walk around the city. I wanted to see everything on my first day. I knew it was impossible, but I wanted to try.

When I returned to the hotel, I was exhausted, but I couldn?t sleep because I kept hearing the fire and police sirens during the night. I lay awake and thought about New York. It was a very big and interesting city with many tall buildings and big cars, and full of noise and busy people. I also decided right then that I had to learn to speak English.

a. knew what he would order

b. finally understood what he said

c. served the same thing the man at the next table was having d. took the order through his gestures

9. After dinner, he _____d______.

a. walked back to the hotel right away

b. went to the movies

c. did some shopping on Broadway

d. had a walking tour about the city

10. That night he could not sleep, because _____d______.

a. he did not know what to do the next day

The angry woman stood by the station. “ The railway owes me £12,”she said to Harry Jenks, the booking clerk (订票员). “My ticket was for May 22nd, and there was no ship from Jersey that night. My daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”

Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “ Come into the office, madam,” he said, “ I?ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd .”

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How ever had he made such a big mistake? Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look healthy,” he said to her. “ Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”

“ Yes,” she answered. “ The beach was beautiful. And I can swim too!”

“ That?s fine,” said Harry. “ My little girl can?t swim a bit yet. Of course, she?s only three-----”

“ I?m four,” the child said proudly. “ I?ll soon be four and a half.”

Harry turned to the mother. “ I remember your ticket, madam,” he said. “ But you didn?t get one for your daughter, did you?”

“ Er, well-----” The woman looked at the child. “ I mean-----she hasn?t started school yet. She?s only four.”

“ A four year old child must have a ticket, madam. A child?s return to Jersey costs----let me see----£13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel bill, you will owe £1.50.The law is the law, but since we have made a mistake-----”

The other day, my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7.30pm. Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food, and song.

By 9.45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless. Other guests began whispering that they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave, just in case some food was about to appear. By 11.00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely Jane and David left hungry and angry.

Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6.30 -8.30pm means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards; 8.00pm or 8.30pm means possible dinner, but 9.30pm and any time thereafter means no food, oat beforehand, roll up late.

But this is not always the case. If asked to a students' party at 6.30pm, it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all, and no one cares. Being the first to arrive - looking eager - is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6.30, she likes to be them, if not on lime, then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties) falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we're young, we're probably closer to student-time than grown-up time.

The accepted custom at present is confusing (混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element (成分) of surprise.

81. The underlined words "off their heads" probably mean______.

A. tired B. crazy C. curious D. hopeless

82. Jane and David' s story is used to show that______ .

83. For some young people, arriving on time for a students' party will probably be considered_______.

A. very difficult B. particularly thoughtful

C. friendly and polite D. socially unacceptable

84. According to the writer, people in their late thirties_______.

A. are likely to arrive late for a party

B. care little about the party time

C. haven' t really grown up yet

D. like surprises at parties

85. What is the general idea of the text?

A. It' s safe to arrive late just when food is served.

B. It' s wise to eat something before going to a party.

C. It' s important to follow social rules of party-going.

4 D. It' s necessary to read invitations carefully.

52. C 上文helps seriously sick children and their families write their…

54. B 据下文的things to write,确定此处应是pictures to draw。

第一分句?…may not grow up to be…?
