First I should say welcome to Yunnan, welcome to Kunming. Today we are going to visit the Stone Forest; it will take us one hour and a half.
Now we are going within the boundaries of Chenggong County. Chenggong County is one of the seven counties of Kunming and also a small county. But it is famous, for it is a land of fruits and flowers. Many kinds of fruits are produced here. The most famous one is Baozhuli(a kind of pear. Li is the Chinese for pear or pears). Why it has such name? There was a story telling that long long ago there was a poor man who went to Dali to become a monk and was given a Buddhist name
“Baozhu”. After many years the monk Baozhu went back to Kunming and along with him he brought back a kind of young pear trees and
planted them in Chenggong County. In memory of him, people called this kind of pears “baozhu”. Because the pear is watery, sweet and fragrant, it was sent across thousands of miles to the capital as a tribute to the
Emperor in the Yuan Dynasty. Chenggong was named after the fact that it paid tribute to the Emperor and the name was given by the Emperor in person. The name “Chenggong” means “the place that gives tribute to the Emperor”. That is how Chenggong gets its name.
Look at those two railways. The wide one is the Nanning-Kunming Railway, which has been finished and opened to traffic. And the narrow one is the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, running across the county, and it
plays an important role in economy. It was finished in 1910, having a long history.
Well, now we are in the boundaries of Yiliang County. It is a big and rich county and industry is developed. Especially agriculture has many favorable conditions. It is a precious land and is called “a granary in the center of Yunnan Province”. And I will never forget to tell you to taste Yiliang Roast Duck when you go to Yiliang. The skin of the roast duck is crisp, and the flesh tender. You will feel that there is a delicious flavor in your mouth.
Everyone, we have been in Shilin County now, the former Lunan County. Lunan, a Yi Autonomous County. The Yi Nationality can be divided into several branches, one of which is called “Sani”. The Yi Nationality in Lunan is mainly the Sani people who are good at singing and dancing as well as bull-fighting and wrestling. After we get the Stone Forest, we will see the friendly and kind Sani people.
According to the scientific appraisal, the stone Forest area was the sedimentary area on the sea floor 230 million years ago. Because of the crustal movements, the sea floor rose and the rocks got out of the sea. After many years of corrosion and erosion by the rainwater, seawater and weathering, plenty of stone peaks, stone columns, stone shoots and stone buds rose straight from the ground and joined together like a forest. That?s why it is called Stone Forest. After a few minutes you will see
thousands of screen-like hills standing together with a lot of green trees and numerous queer peaks and dangerous stones erecting with different shapes and forms.
Now we are at the gate of Stone Forest, please follow me, I will show you a wonderful place.
The Stone Forest consists of seven natural scenic area: Two forests, two Major and Minor Stone Forests, and the Naigu Stone Forest, the two caves are Zhiyun Cave and Qifeng Cave, the two lakes are called Changhu Lake and Yuehu Lake, the waterfall is Dadieshui Waterfall which has a drop of 88 meters and a flow capacity of 150 cubic meter per second. And we choose the Major Stone Forest as our first destination.
Look! This is the first scenic spot of the stone Forest, called Chushui Guanyin that means “Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) getting out of the water”. If you look at it on the east side of the lake, the figure will be more vivid. And this lake is Shilin Lake.
This way, please. This is the Lion Pavilion. The hill under our feet is called the Lion Hill. And from here, the vast immense stone forest is coming into view. Have you seen the two stones in the pond? They are just like two small oxen playing with each other in the pond. This scenic spot is called Black Oxen Playing with Water.
Look at this enormous stone that stands in front of us and prevents us from seeing the marvelous scenery of the Stone Forest. It seems that it would block our way.

I went to visit the Yellow River Forest Park in July together with three of my classmates. It was very boring when staying in the bus for a long timewhich made me doze off all the time and at some time. I nearly struck my head on the chair in the front of me. After three hours' journey by bus we finally got to the park. But to my disappointthere was nothing interesting here which were quiet normal things. Compared with the my school I stayed in here was very noisy and messy.
