英语作文春节 the spring festival celebration

The Spring Festival celebration

The Spring Festival is the biggest and most important traditional festival in China. Not only for people to get together with their families, their friends, but also offers the time and space for people to relax themselves.

Traditionally, the Chinese celebrate the Spring Festival in the following ways:

Spring Purchasing: people begin preparing for the New Year’s purchases. This is called "Seeing the New Year in". Everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include different kinds of goods and foods, but also various decorations装饰装潢, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing.

Sweeping the Dust。“Dust” is homophonic同音的,谐音 with “chen”(尘)in Chinese, which means old and past. In this way, “sweeping the dust” before the Spring Festival means a thorough cleaning of houses to sweep away bad luck in the past year. This custom shows a good wish of putting away old things to welcome a new life. In a word, just before the Spring Festival comes, every household will give a thorough cleaning to bid farewell to the old year and usher in the new.

Spring Decorating装饰(大红灯笼和倒福字): some people will hang two big red lanterns outside both sides of the front door of their houses. Red paper-cuttings can be seen on window glass and brightly colored New Year paintings with auspicious meanings may be put on the wall. Red couplets are posted on the doors of people’s houses. They symbolize happiness, prosperity and good luck in the New Year. The Chinese character "fu"

(meaning blessing or happiness) is a must. The character put on paper can be pasted normally or upside down, for in Chinese the "reversed fu"

is homophonic with "fu comes", both being pronounced as "fudaole."

The Laba Rice Porridge Festival腊八粥On the 8th day of the 12th lunar month, many families make laba porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with glutinous rice, millet, seeds of Job's tears, jujube berries, lotus seeds, beans, longan and gingko.

Preliminary Eve ,,The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called Preliminary Eve. At this time, people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god. Having Jiaozi ,,,On New Year’s Eve, the whole family will sit together to make jiaozi and celebrate the Spring Festival. The shape of jiaozi is like gold ingot from ancient China. New Year's Feast: Spring Festival is a time for family reunion. People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat dinner together. People from north and south have different sayings about the food they eat on this special day. The meal is more luxurious than usual. mean auspiciousness, abundance and richness. Southern Chinese eat “niangao"

(New Year cake made of glutinous rice flour) on this occasion, because as a homophone, niangao means "higher and higher every year". In northern China, a traditional dish for the feast is "Jiaozi"

or dumplings shaped like a crescent moon.

Lucky Money: It is the money given to kids from their parents and grandparents as New Year gift. The money is believed to bring good luck, ward off 避开挡住 monsters怪物or unfortunate;

hence因此 the name// lucky money". Parents and grandparents first put money in small, especially made red envelope and give to their kids after the New Year's Feast. It is one of the kids’favorite things in Spring Festival.

On the second day, the married daughters should return to their parents’ home to celebrate the day. There are a lot of activities during the Spring Festival including opera and movie performances lion dances and temple fairs. There are also people who prefer to stay at home and watch television. Of course, on the Lantern Festival元宵节, watching festive lanterns and eating “tangyuan” are also the traditional movements.

Spring festival is what the kids look forward to… they may have free time from studying, they may have many nice foods to eat, they may have new clothes to wear, they may have chance to see their relatives and friends… Whatever they do during the spring festival, parents would give them extra and special favor, even if they do something wrong, parents would not scold them during this festival… They can get some small money from parents, grandparents and other relatives on the Spring Festival Eve as a gift.

The Laba Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth month of the lunar Chinese calendar. "La"

is the name given to the 12th lunar month and 8 is pronounced as "ba"

in Chinese, which translated is "Laba."

There are several legends about the origin of this festivity and we could not tell which one is true. But what we know today is that this festival started as a sacrificial offering to ancestors. It was also a time for the ancient Chinese to pray to heaven and earth that there would be a bountiful harvest. Many people hoped for good luck as well for the coming year.

Traditionally, the Laba rice porridge is the most important element of the festival. Generally, the porridge contains eight ingredients which can include glutinous rice, red beans, millet, Chinese sorghum, peas, dried lotus seeds and some other ingredients, such as dried dates, chestnut meat, walnut meat, almond, peanut, etc. The porridge must be boiled for many hours and then offered as a sacrifice to the ancestors. This must be done before noontime. Also, it is tradition that family members eat the porridge together. Then they leave some as a symbol of hope for a good harvest the coming year.

Another custom is the soaking of Laba garlic. Garlic is soaked in vinegar for more than twenty days starting from Laba festival. Then when the Chinese New Year comes, the garlic and vinegar is used alongside jiaozi on the table.
